Note: Where recognition, association, and semantics lead down the path of retention.

The range of perception of one’s sight is absolutely phenomenal, normally allowing the eye to be the most developed sensory organ in humans. The mind’s eye permits the perceptual processing, encoding, storage, and retrieval of one’s surroundings to eventually produce a mental image of a specific event. Not surprisingly, the development of visual memory requires contact time, upholding the adage out of sight, out of mind. Foreign language learners benefit from surrounding themselves with pertinent vocabulary and thus full immersion into a learning environment where the target language is the medium of instruction not only greatly accelerates academic learning curves, but also provides a realistic and meaningful experience from which language passes to long-term memory. Factors affecting visual memory include age and sleep or quiet rest among additional outside stimulates or lack thereof.
