AlphabetizationWhy one should not follow a dictionary’s example while learning vocabulary.
- Just listen.
- Listen and read along silently.
Alphabetical order is a well known and effective way to arrange vocabulary to allow rapid retrieval. At least it was. The speed of flipping through the pages of a dictionary to locate a specific term has no comparison with the celerity of voice recognition software. Unfortunately, alphabetization fails to provide semantic background whatsoever. Beyond memorization of a specific contextual alphabet, any attempt at committing a vocabulary list to memory should be discarded entirely. Another mnemonic device should be utilized in conjunction to promote a higher lexical inventory.
